Our Assessment: The Colt Single Action Army Second Generation represents the definitive modern revival of one of the most iconic revolver designs in American firearms history. After First Generation production ended in 1941, Colt reintroduced the Single Action Army in 1956, using original tooling and closely adhering to prewar specifications. By the late 1960s, Second Generation production had reached a refined peak, combining classic Colt craftsmanship with consistent postwar manufacturing quality. Revolvers from this period are especially prized for their vivid case colors, excellent polishing, and faithful execution of traditional Single Action Army features.

This example, manufactured in 1969, is chambered in .357 Magnum and fitted with a    5 1/2 inch barrel, a popular and well-balanced configuration. Condition is exceptional and approaches mint. The revolver retains approximately 99 percent of its original blue and case-hardened finish, with strong, vivid case coloring and no carbon rings on the cylinder. The bore is mirror bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating a full 10 out of 10. The cylinder shows only a faint, intermittent turn line, consistent with extremely limited handling or cycling rather than sustained use. Markings remain crisp, and all screws are sharp.

The revolver is fitted with highly distinctive one-piece carved ivory grips featuring a steerhead motif and a Texas Ranger badge on the left panel. These grips are in excellent condition, showing no chips, cracks, or perceptible handling wear, and add significant visual and collector appeal. Mechanically, the action functions correctly with tight lockup, a crisp trigger, and the correct separate cylinder bushing characteristic of Second Generation SAAs. The revolver appears unfired beyond factory testing and is accompanied by its Colt factory box. Overall, this 1969 Colt Single Action Army stands as a near-mint Second Generation example, combining desirable caliber, outstanding condition, and striking custom grip presentation, making it an exceptional acquisition for advanced Colt collectors.
