Markings: The barrels are marked “–MODEL 21— WINCHESTER / TRADE MARK —- 12 GAUGE—”   MADE IN U.S.A. WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO / NEW HAVEN, CONN.—PATENTS PENDING—” The top tang is marked with the serial number “1073”. The barrel flats are marked ” PROOF STEEL” and show Winchester proof marks.. The right barrel is marked  “MOD” and the left barrel is marked “CYL”.

Choke:  Fixed:  Right Barrel – Modified, Left Barrel –Cylinder.

Sights / Optics: There is a single metal bead front sight atop a matte serrated rib.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a two-piece checkered walnut with a semi-pistol grip, straight comb with a splinter forend and rubber buttplate.  The stock and forend currently show scattered handling marks and evidence of age.  There are compression dings and scratches present but no chips or cracks. Overall, the stocks are in about Very Good condition.   

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Likely refinished

Bore Condition: The bores are bright with no visible erosion. There are minor scratches throughout the barrels. In this writer’s opinion, the bores rate at a 8.5/10.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains 50% of its blued finish.  There are signs in the flaking of the old blue that show signs that the gun was refinished with blue over an original case hardened receiver.  There is more wear of the blue on the bottom of the receiver and the trigger guard.  The barrels and receiver show scattered faint marks and thinning of blue finish. The metal shows some minor edge wear and finish thinning. The screw heads are sharp. The markings remain clear. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The lockup is tight with no play. The selective ejectors and safety function properly. We have not test fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 21 stands as Winchester Repeating Arms Company’s definitive statement on the American side by side shotgun, conceived as a purpose built answer to the finest European doubles of the early twentieth century. Built on a robust box lock action and hand fitted from the outset, the Model 21 earned its reputation for strength, longevity, and understated elegance in both sporting and professional circles. Early examples such as this 1930 produced shotgun represent the formative period of the model’s production, when Winchester was establishing the Model 21 as its flagship double barrel offering.

This example is chambered in 12 Gauge with 28 inch barrels and fixed Modified and Cylinder chokes, a highly usable and traditional configuration well suited to upland hunting and general field use. The bores remain bright with only minor internal scratching, rating very well for age, and the action retains a tight lockup with proper function throughout. Externally, the metal shows expected finish wear with evidence of a refinish over an originally case hardened receiver, consistent with a shotgun that saw honest use over time. The walnut stocks show scattered handling marks and compression dings but remain free of chips or cracks, presenting as a solid and attractive working stock set.

Overall, this Winchester Model 21 stands as a well preserved, serviceable example of one of the most respected American double barrel shotguns ever produced. Its configuration, condition, and early production date place it squarely within the tradition that has made the Model 21 so enduring among sportsmen and collectors alike.
