Our Assessment: Adopted on the eve of the First World War, the Lange Pistole 08—better known today as the Artillery Luger—was Germany’s attempt to extend the reach and utility of the standard P.08 pistol. With its distinctive 8-inch barrel, finely machined tangent sight arm graduated out to 800 meters, and the precision toggle system built by DWM, the LP.08 was intended for artillery crews, storm troops, and specialist units operating forward of traditional rifle formations. This 1914-dated example sits at the very beginning of wartime production, retaining the characteristic long-recoil feel, long-barreled silhouette, and tight-fitting components that made the model one of the most visually striking sidearms of the Great War.

Chambered in 9mm Parabellum, a cartridge introduced in 1902 and soon adopted widely across Europe for its controllable recoil and dependable performance, the Artillery Luger combined early semi-automatic engineering with the ballistic qualities that would define service pistols for generations. Even with its refinished exterior and bore wear, this pistol preserves the unmistakable mechanical identity of the LP.08—its matching numbered parts, adjustable rear sight, and extended barrel all marking it as a product of Germany’s push to equip specialized troops during the dynamic early years of the First World War.
