Our Assessment: The modern Winchester Model 70 Super Grade continues the legacy of the “Rifleman’s Rifle,” blending classic aesthetics with updated manufacturing quality and the refined performance expected of today’s premium sporting rifles. Produced by Winchester in Morgan, Utah, this rifle showcases the company’s renewed focus on craftsmanship, tight tolerances, crisp lines, superb wood-to-metal fit, and the controlled-round-feed action that has secured the Model 70’s reputation among hunters and riflemen for more than eight decades.
Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, one of the most versatile and time-proven cartridges ever developed, this rifle is capable of taking nearly any North American game with proper load selection. The 24-inch barrel provides excellent balance and ballistic efficiency, while the bore remains flawless—bright, sharp, and fully capable of the precision expected from premium hunting rifles. The included Eduord Kettner fixed 6x scope, mounted in sturdy rings and a one-piece base, complements the rifle with a clean, uncluttered sight picture and rugged field utility.
Aesthetically, the rifle stands out with its striking walnut Super Grade stock; a piece of high-quality walnut featuring rich grain, a fluted comb with cheekpiece, black forend tip, red recoil pad, and sharply cut checkering. The stock shows no noticeable wear, and the metal finish retains approximately 98 percent of its deep, lustrous blue. A minor ding at the muzzle crown and faint bolt-operational marks are the only detractors from an otherwise excellent presentation.
With its modern build quality, classic styling, premium optic, and outstanding overall condition, this Model 70 Super Grade is a superb hunting rifle as well as an attractive addition to any fine sporting rifle collection. Please see our photos and good luck on your bid! – J.D.
