The stock has been sanded and refinished. The butt plate has lost its finish and shows surface rust and rub marks. The door spring is strong. Overall the stock is in Fair+ condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. Our gauges show a throat of 6 and a muzzle of 1+. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.25/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish.  The friction surfaces of the bolt and the receiver show very minor rub wear. The finish has turned green with age. The cylinder, sight wings and cylinder lock show finish loss. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall the rifle itself, not the stock, is in Very Good+ condition. With the stock the rifle is in Good+ condition.

Mechanics:  The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1 Garand, produced in February 1945 near the end of World War II, holds historical significance as one of the iconic service rifles of the era. This specific rifle, equipped with an original Springfield barrel also from 2-1945, was later converted to a Mk 2 Mod 0 configuration in 7.62 NATO by Harrington & Richardson (H&R), reflecting its postwar adaptation for modern military use. The Mk 2 Mod 0 and Mod 1 program was initiated by the U.S. Navy, which sought to chamber M1 Garands in the then-new 7.62 NATO cartridge to maintain compatibility with other NATO forces and ammunition standardization. The Navy purchased about 30,000 new barrels from Springfield Armory in 1965 and 1966 for the mod 1 program that were installed by H&R and American Machine & Foundry.

The Mod 0 conversion process included modifying the barrel and chamber dimensions to accommodate the shorter 7.62 NATO round, initially and in this case achieved by installing a chamber insert. Mod 0 later models were converted by re-barreling the rifle entirely. H&R, a reputable manufacturer and contractor for U.S. military arms, performed this work under stringent specifications. The rifle retains the same robust action and battle-tested design of the original Garand but benefits from the ballistic characteristics of the 7.62 NATO cartridge, including reduced recoil.

This specific example combines the WWII heritage of Springfield Armory production with the post war modifications by H&R, making it a fascinating artifact of two distinct periods in U.S. military history.
