Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1873 remains one of the most recognizable lever action rifles ever produced, and modern reproductions allow shooters and collectors to experience the classic form with contemporary manufacturing standards. Originally introduced in the nineteenth century, the Model 1873 became a defining symbol of the American frontier, valued for its smooth action, practical handling, and versatility. This modern production rifle, manufactured by Miroku in Japan for Winchester, faithfully captures the external lines, balance, and traditional features that made the original so enduring while benefiting from modern metallurgy and precision machining.

Chambered in .357 Magnum with the ability to also fire .38 Special, this rifle offers a modern cartridge pairing that blends historical aesthetics with contemporary practicality. The .357 Magnum provides strong performance from a 24 inch barrel, while .38 Special allows for mild recoil and economical shooting. The full length tubular magazine, octagonal barrel, and buckhorn rear sight mirror the classic sporting configuration of nineteenth century Winchester rifles, making this an appealing blend of period styling and modern functionality.

This example retains approximately 99 percent of its original blued finish, with deep, even coloration and crisp, well defined markings throughout. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and only minor fouling present, rating 9.5 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The walnut stocks show virtually no wear aside from the addition of sling studs, presenting in Excellent condition with a measured length of pull of 13 inches. Screw heads are sharp, the action functions correctly including the half cock safety notch, and overall the rifle presents as an exceptionally clean example of Winchester’s modern Model 1873.
