Action Type: Semi-Automatic carbine fed by detachable single stack magazine. 

Markings:  The left side of the barrel is marked “Kal. 22 WMR”. The left side of the receiver is marked “ERMA ERMA-WERKE MOd. ESG 22 KAL. .22WMR ”. The right side of the receiver “Made In West-Germany”. The right side of the barrel has an Excam import mark.     

Barrel Length: 19.5″

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a fixed blade set between protective ears. The rear sight is a version of a late style sliding adjustable aperture sight slid onto a Dovetail style cut in the top of the receiver and screw set in place.    

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is very similar to a traditional M1 style stock with an Oval cut, enclosed wood, with a rotary style safety, and no rivet upper handguard.   The LOP measures about 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the butt plate. The wood shows lines, compressions and some scratches scattered throughout. There are no chips or cracks. The butt plate shows surface rust. The right side of the stock has four repair plugs in it. Overall the stock set is in Good+-Very Good condition.    

Magazine Quantity & Condition: This rifle includes one 12 round magazine in Very Good+ condition.  

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition:  The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion or lead fouling present. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.75/10.   

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its finish. There is very minor finish loss on the friction surfaces of the receiver and bolt. The barrel band shows some surface rust forming. The finish of the rifle shows some minor discoloration from age and some fine surface level lines. There is dust in a lot of the recesses and the rifle will benefit from a good cleaning. The screw to the barrel band is bent and will most likely need to be cut, removed and replaced to restore the rifle to full working condition. The markings are clear. Overall this rifle is in Very Good condition.     

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: This Erma Werke ESG22 is a West German made .22 WMR rifle that faithfully mirrors the look and handling of the U.S. M1 Carbine, but in a rimfire magnum format. It features a 19.5″ barrel and a 12-round detachable magazine, giving it excellent velocity and flat-shooting performance for the .22 WMR cartridge. The controls, profile, and overall balance closely follow the original M1 Carbine pattern, making it instantly familiar and extremely fun to shoot.
