Our Assessment:  This Carl Walther KKJ-HO represents the high-water mark of postwar German sporting rimfire and small-bore centerfire rifle craftsmanship, produced during a period when Walther was applying its Olympic-grade precision standards to civilian sporting arms. Built in Ulm and imported by Interarms, the KKJ-HO combines classic European proportions with refined mechanical execution, resulting in a rifle that balances elegance, precision, and purposeful field use. The slim 22 inch barrel, clean receiver lines, and traditional walnut stock give the rifle a restrained, businesslike appearance that reflects its intended role as a serious varmint and small game rifle rather than a purely recreational arm.

Chambered in .22 Hornet, the rifle is well suited to the cartridge’s original design intent: accurate, efficient performance on varmints and small predators with modest recoil and report. Introduced in the early 1930s, the .22 Hornet earned its reputation as one of the first truly successful commercial high-velocity small-bore centerfire cartridges, and it remains valued for its precision and economy. The bright bore with sharp rifling supports this role well, while the double set trigger system allows the shooter to select between a conventional hunting pull or a light, precise set trigger when conditions call for deliberate shot placement. The factory iron sights reflect European hunting tradition, while the grooved receiver and mounted Nikon Prostaff optic provide modern flexibility without detracting from the rifle’s classic character.

Overall, this KKJ-HO presents as a well-preserved example of Walther’s sporting rifle output from the early 1970s, retaining its original finish and exhibiting honest, light handling wear consistent with careful use. The walnut stock shows typical age-related finish checking but remains structurally sound and visually appealing, complementing the rifle’s refined lines. Mechanically sound and properly configured with scope and sling, this rifle stands as a capable shooter and a compelling representative of German sporting rifle design during the Cold War era.
