Stock Configuration & Condition:  The wood stock has a traditional Semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, two sling loops, stacking ring, and a checkered metal butt plate with storage compartment.  The LOP measures 13” inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the butt plate. The rifle includes a winter trigger!!!. The stock has been painted white. The wood shows compressions and scratches both over and under the paint. The stock shows several chips. There are no visible cracks. The butt plate  has some paint on it and appears to have lost most of its finish. The plate has turned brown with age. The door spring is strong and functions correctly. Overall the stock set is in Good+-Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is well defined. There is some very minor pitting in the grooves of the bore. Our gauges show a muzzle of 0+ and a throat erosion of 1. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.25/10

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. The exterior of the rifle shows minimal wear, marks and signs of use. Even the friction surfaces show only minor wear. The wings of the front sight show some finish thinning. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall the rifle is in about Very Good+ condition.

Mechanics:  The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes a leather sling, winter trigger, and the Griffin and Howe paperwork.

Our Assessment: This Springfield M1 Garand was manufactured in April 1945 and later updated with a Danish VAR barrel dated July 1966, a combination well known for excellent accuracy and long service life. The rifle was sent to Griffin & Howe to have an M1C-style scope mount professionally installed, and it includes the accompanying paperwork documenting that work, an important detail that adds credibility and interest to the rifle. It is fitted with a “SA GAW” marked stock, identifying Springfield Armory production during Col. George A. Woody’s tenure, and is further equipped with a winter trigger and enlarged safety, features associated with cold-weather use and later service modifications.

One of the most intriguing aspects of this rifle is the stock, which has been painted white. While the exact reason for this finish remains undocumented, research including review of Bruce Canfield’s The M1 Garand, did not produce a definitive explanation. A single period photograph exists showing a white-painted M1 Garand reportedly used by the 10th Mountain Division during alpine operations, but this could not be conclusively verified. As such, the white finish should be viewed as an unusual and eye-catching feature rather than a confirmed historical variant. Taken as a whole, this rifle presents a compelling blend of late-war Springfield production, Danish postwar service influence, documented Griffin & Howe work, and a genuinely uncommon appearance that makes it a standout conversation piece as well as a capable shooter given the bore condition.
