Our Assessment: This Harrington and Richardson USRA Model Single Shot Third Variation exemplifies the company’s interwar focus on affordable, accurate rimfire pistols built for training, recreation, and informal target use. Produced around 1930, the USRA line reflected H&R’s effort to deliver well-finished, mechanically simple handguns at a time when rimfire shooting was a cornerstone of American marksmanship. The long 10 inch ribbed barrel and clean, utilitarian frame give this pistol a purposeful appearance, balancing target-style proportions with compact, straightforward construction.
Chambered in .22 Long Rifle, the pistol is well matched to a cartridge that had already become the dominant rimfire round in the United States by the early 20th century, valued for its accuracy, low recoil, and economy. The bright bore with sharp rifling supports that role, and the top-break, auto-eject action reflects H&R’s emphasis on convenience and reliability for the everyday shooter. The adjustable rear sight provides practical flexibility, while the pinned front blade, though altered from its original configuration, remains consistent with the pistol’s target-oriented design.
Overall, this example presents as a well-preserved survivor, retaining approximately 90 percent of its original blued finish with only light handling wear and minor corrosion staining visible. The oversized checkered walnut grip shows only modest signs of use and complements the pistol’s period-correct aesthetic. With clear markings, a strong bore, and honest condition, this USRA Model stands as a representative example of early 20th century American rimfire pistols and H&R’s enduring place in that market.
