Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 94 XTR Big Bore represents a late twentieth century evolution of one of America’s most iconic sporting rifles, adapting John Moses Browning’s classic lever action design to more powerful modern cartridges. Introduced in the late 1970s, the Big Bore series featured strengthened receivers and barrels specifically engineered to handle higher pressures than traditional Model 94 chamberings. These rifles reflect Winchester’s effort to modernize the platform while retaining the familiar handling, balance, and aesthetics that made the Model 94 a mainstay of North American hunting for generations.
Chambered in .375 Winchester, this rifle is paired with a cartridge developed to deliver substantially greater energy than the traditional .30-30 class while maintaining compatibility with a tubular magazine. Introduced in 1978, the .375 Winchester offered heavy bullet performance and deep penetration suitable for large deer, elk, and similar game, particularly in timbered terrain where decisive terminal performance mattered. The 20 inch barrel and full length tubular magazine preserve the fast handling qualities expected of a Model 94, while the XTR trim level adds upgraded wood and finish consistent with Winchester’s higher grade production of the period.
This example retains approximately 97 percent of its original blued finish, with only minor scattered scratches visible on the barrel and receiver and light operational wear to the action. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, showing only minor fouling and rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The checkered walnut stocks remain solid with sharp checkering, no cracks or chips, and only a few minor compressions, presenting in Very Good plus condition with a length of pull of 13 1/2 inches. Markings are clear, screw heads remain sharp, and the action functions correctly with a crisp trigger pull. Overall, this Big Bore Model 94 stands as a well preserved and increasingly scarce example of Winchester’s modernized lever action era.
