Our Assessment: The Savage Model 1899 stands as one of the most forward-thinking sporting rifle designs of the early twentieth century, breaking decisively from traditional lever-action conventions. Introduced by Arthur Savage at the close of the nineteenth century, the Model 1899 incorporated a hammerless action, solid top receiver, and internal rotary magazine, features that allowed the safe use of pointed bullets and higher-pressure cartridges. By 1921, the rifle had firmly established itself as a premier modern sporting arm, favored by hunters who valued accuracy, strength, and innovative engineering.

Chambered in .250-3000 Savage, this Model 1899G is closely tied to one of the most influential sporting cartridges of its era. Introduced in 1915, the .250-3000 was the first commercial cartridge to achieve a published velocity of 3,000 feet per second, marking a turning point in small-bore, high-velocity hunting rounds. Designed for efficiency and flat trajectory, it became especially popular for deer and similar game, and it paired exceptionally well with the Savage rotary magazine system. The 22 inch barrel and Lyman tang peep sight reflect a practical, accuracy-focused configuration typical of serious early twentieth century hunters.

This example retains approximately 85 percent of its metal refinish, with light edge wear, scattered scratches, and minor surface corrosion visible, most notably on the right side of the receiver. The bore remains bright with sharp rifling and fouling present, rating 8 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The walnut stocks show honest use with handling marks, light dings, and oil darkening around the receiver, presenting in Good condition, while the takedown forend lever functions correctly. Markings remain clear, screw heads are clean, and muted traces of color case are still visible. Overall, this Savage 1899G presents as a solid, historically significant example of an early high-velocity sporting rifle from one of America’s most innovative manufacturers.
