Our Assessment:  This vintage trade gun blunderbuss is a classic example of the utilitarian smoothbore arms produced for trade, travel, and close-quarters defense during the flintlock era. Blunderbusses were favored for their compact length, intimidating appearance, and effectiveness at short range, making them common among merchants, guards, and frontier users. The flared muzzle and smoothbore barrel reflect a design philosophy centered on practicality rather than precision, especially in environments where speed and reliability mattered most.

This example features a 13 inch trumpet shaped barrel chambered in approximately .69 caliber and bears various trade proof marks that remain legible despite age and wear. The steel barrel and lock have worn to an even, age-appropriate patina, and the screw heads show marring but remain serviceable. The one piece hardwood stock displays visible tool marks from original manufacture along with scattered handling marks, dents, and scratches accumulated over long use. There are no chips or cracks noted, though overall wear places the stock in fair condition for its age.

The bore is heavily pitted and corroded, rating 2 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. Mechanically, the flintlock action functions correctly, though the ramrod is currently stuck in the stock. The musket has not been fired. Overall, this blunderbuss presents as an honest and well worn trade gun, valued for its period character, surviving markings, and unmistakable form rather than condition or shootability.
