Our Assessment: By 1937, Mauser had fully assumed production of the German P.08, continuing a design already deeply associated with Imperial and early Wehrmacht service. The Luger’s distinctive toggle action, precision machining, and compact form made it one of the most recognizable sidearms of the era, carried across Europe during the rearmament years leading into the Second World War. This example reflects that transitional period, built on an Erfurt-marked frame with a DWM toggle assembly and later refinished—an intersection of components that mirrors the long and often complex service life of prewar Lugers as they moved through arsenals and wartime inventories.

Chambered in 9mm Luger, a cartridge introduced in the early 20th century and widely adopted for its dependable function and manageable recoil, the P.08 served both military and police forces throughout the conflict. The visible finish wear, mixed-numbered parts, and softened straw coloration seen here speak to years of handling and refurbishment while still preserving the overall character of a prewar German service pistol.
