Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked with Remington’s Ilion, NY address, patent numbers, “ZZ” date code, and “.300 SAV.”, along with a couple of proof marks. The right side of the barrel is marked with a series of proofs. The left side of the receiver is marked “Remington / 125687 Gamemaster / MODEL 760”.

Barrel Length: 22”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade, dovetailed to a serrated ramp, screwed to the barrel. The rear sight has been removed. The receiver is mounted with a Redfield 4x Wide Angle scope with a duplex reticle. The glass in the scope is clear. The scope shows light wear, with a few light scattered scratches and dings throughout the scope’s finish, along with some thinning finish around the back lens. Overall, the scope rates in Good to Very Good condition. The scope is mounted on a one-piece Weaver base, and sits in 1” weaver rings.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are a two-piece checkered walnut stock set, with a capped semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, metal serrated buttplate, and a checkered forend/pump. The LOP measures 13 3/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stocks show moderate to heavy wear, with scattered scratches, dings, scuffs, and compressions throughout both the buttstock and the forend. There are several severe gouges in the wood, mainly throughout the buttstock. The buttplate does not appear original to the rifle, as it does not fit the buttstock well. The forend has had 4 nails driven into it, with evidence of grinding marks (Reference our High Resolution photos in the link provided). Despite the wear, the stocks fit tightly to the frame with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stocks rate in Fair condition.

Magazine Quantity & Condition: 1x 4rd factory magazine, in Good condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 65% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows moderate wear, with finish thinning throughout the faux magazine tube, action bars, receiver, and magazine. The finish on the receiver is starting to take on a patina. Most of the finish has worn off of the trigger guard. There are scattered scratches and dings throughout all of the metal surfaces. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are sharp and the pins are unmarred. Overall, this rifle rates in Fair to Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the cross-bolt safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the magazine and scope as mentioned above.

Our Assessment:  Introduced in 1952, the Remington 760 Gamemaster carried forward the company’s long tradition of fast-handling, accurate sporting rifles, but with a modern pump-action design that offered the speed of a slide rifle and the precision of a locked breech. Early production rifles like this 1953 example are especially notable for their milled receivers, clean machine work, and classic postwar styling. While this rifle shows significant exterior wear from decades of field use and its walnut stocks bear the deep scratches, gouges, and improvised repairs of an often-carried hunting gun, the mechanical heart of the rifle remains sound. The bright, sharp bore reflects minimal internal wear, and the action cycles properly. The period Redfield 4x Wide Angle scope adds to its mid century character and practical utility.

Chambered in .300 Savage, introduced in 1920 and long respected for delivering near 30-06 performance in a compact case, the Model 760 made excellent use of the cartridge’s accuracy and efficiency. Hunters throughout the 1950s and 1960s relied on this combination for deer, black bear, and similar game, and the cartridge remains effective in the field today. Despite the cosmetic challenges of this example, its strong bore, correct early features, and honest working gun appearance give it the authentic feel of a rifle that saw real use during the golden age of American big game hunting.
