Our Assessment: Ruger’s M77 line, first introduced in 1968, was Bill Ruger’s vision of the ideal modern sporting rifle—combining classic Mauser-inspired features with streamlined manufacturing and Ruger’s hallmark durability. The action utilized a controlled-round-feed–style extractor, a robust bolt design, and the innovative angled front action screw bedding system, all of which contributed to its reputation for strength and reliability. Over time, Ruger expanded the M77 family into rimfire territory, resulting in the 77/17, a precision bolt-action platform tailored to the high-velocity .17 HMR cartridge. The pairing proved exceptionally successful, offering accuracy, low recoil, and superior small-game performance.
This rifle, built in 2010, features a 20-inch stainless barrel, synthetic stock, and a high-magnification Simons 6–24×50 scope, making it ideally suited for varmint hunting, target shooting, and long-range rimfire accuracy. Condition is a standout: the rifle retains 99% of its brushed stainless finish, with only minimal signs of handling, and the stock remains crisp with sharp checkering. The bore is bright with pronounced rifling and no erosion, rating 9/10 in this writer’s opinion. Mechanically, the action cycles smoothly as expected from Ruger’s refined bolt system.
Completing the package is a generous set of accessories—two rotary magazines, a bipod, sling, and 200 rounds of Winchester .17 HMR—giving the next owner everything needed to take full advantage of the rifle’s capabilities. Whether for precision pest control or bench-rest accuracy work, this Ruger 77/17 remains a superbly engineered and highly functional rimfire rifle that continues the proud legacy of the M77 line.
