Our Assessment: ?The Ithaca SKB Model 200E reflects a well defined period in postwar sporting shotgun production, when American companies increasingly partnered with Japanese manufacturers to meet demand for affordable yet well made doubles. SKB of Japan began producing shotguns for export in the early 1960s, quickly earning a reputation for excellent steel quality, precise machining, and consistent assembly. Ithaca Gun Company entered into this partnership in the mid 1960s, importing SKB built side by side shotguns and marketing them as “Custom Crafted for Ithaca by SKB.” The Model 200E was manufactured during roughly the late 1960s through the 1970s and represented Ithaca’s field grade ejector model, positioned above basic extractor guns while remaining accessible to working hunters who wanted a reliable, modern double.
This example is configured with short 22 inch barrels and fixed chokes, Modified in the right barrel and Full in the left, giving it a quick handling, close cover profile. The bores are bright with only minor plastic fouling and no erosion, rating a strong 9 out of 10. Approximately 90 percent of the original blued finish remains, with light handling and operational wear visible, some finish wear at the muzzle, and crisp receiver engraving still intact. All serialized parts are matched, the action locks up tightly, and the individual ejectors function correctly, reflecting the durable SKB boxlock design.
The stock set shows extensive prior alteration and wear. The beavertail forend has a large repaired crack secured with exterior screws, and a previous owner added numerous decorative brass tacks to both the forend and buttstock. There are heavy pressure dings, handling marks, and worn checkering throughout, resulting in a Poor overall stock condition despite solid fit to the action. Taken as a whole, this Model 200E stands as an honest example of the Ithaca SKB collaboration, mechanically sound with strong bores and good metal finish, but with wood condition that clearly defines its character and value. It remains a representative example of the late 1960s–1970s era when Japanese made doubles became a significant and enduring part of the American shotgun market.
