Our Assessment: A commanding, dangerous-game configuration of the legendary pre-64 Model 70, the Super Grade African presents all the hallmark features that made Winchester’s premium big-bore rifles icons of mid-century safari culture. The deep, refined Super Grade stock carries its trademark cheekpiece, ebony forend tip, fine checkering, and elegant, flowing lines — all wrapped around a massive, controlled-round-feed action engineered for absolute reliability under heavy recoil. The long, robust barrel profile reflects the rifle’s intended role: delivering the full authority of the .458 Winchester Magnum with stability, controlled muzzle rise, and a sighting plane built for deliberate, confident shots on dangerous game.
The metalwork displays the craftsmanship synonymous with pre-64 production — clean machining, tight lockup, and a finish that communicates strength without excess ornamentation. In hand, the rifle feels substantial and unyielding, its weight distribution tailored to tame the formidable .458 Win. Mag. cartridge. This is a rifle built with purpose and presence: a serious tool for the professional hunter or the well-equipped safari client of its era.
