Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON”. The right side of the barrel is marked “.38 S.&W. SPECIAL CTG.”. The right side of the frame is marked with a Marcas Registradas. The left side of the frame has a S&W Monogram. The yoke cut is marked “60-4” and “BSR2166”. The crane is marked “1-091”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a low-profile serrated ramped blade that is pinned to the barrel rib and painted white. The rear sight is an adjustable square notch at the rear of the frame.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The aftermarket stocks are 2 piece checkered wood with finger grips. The grip screw is moderately tool marked but still has a strong slot. The checkering is no longer sharp but is distinct. There are scattered light handling marks. There is a 1/8” chip in the back of the stocks. Overall, these grips are in Very Good condition.
Type of Finish: Frosted Stainless Steel / case hardened hammer and trigger.
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 99% of its metal finish. The cylinder has a sharp turn line. The screwheads and checkering are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver rates an Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The double action is smooth. The cylinder locks up with minimal side-to-side movement. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 60 revolver, a stainless steel development of the venerable Smith & Wesson Model 36 Chief’s Special revolver, has been in production since 1965. It was the first regular production all stainless steel firearm made. This model has been popular since its inception, with a waiting list at gun shops for up to six months to purchase one when it was first released. It is indeed a significant piece in the history of firearms. The -4 variant was a limited production of the Target Model with a full underlug and a new yoke retention system.
