Our Assessment: The Egyptian Hakim rifle is a fascinating Cold War-era design that blends European engineering with Middle Eastern military history. Based on the Swedish AG-42 Ljungman, the Hakim was adapted by Egypt in the 1950s at Factory 54 (Maadi) to chamber the powerful 8mm Mauser cartridge (7.92x57mm), which was widely available due to surplus wartime stocks. Unlike the gas-piston systems of most semi-automatic rifles of the period, the Hakim uses a direct impingement system, with a distinctive adjustable gas valve to tune performance. Its robust construction, long sight radius, and soft-shooting recoil impulse—thanks to the muzzle brake and hefty build—make it a unique and enjoyable rifle to shoot and collect. This example is in Good+ condition, showing about 92% of its arsenal-refinished blued metal finish with light thinning, patina, and scattered scratches from service and handling. The bore is bright with well-defined rifling and little to no erosion, earning a 9/10 rating in this writer’s opinion—an impressive feature given the age and common use of corrosive ammunition in this caliber. The two-piece wood stock set has been refinished and shows typical dents, small chips, and pressure marks from military handling but remains structurally sound with no cracks. All markings, including Arabic serials and crest, are legible, and the action cycles correctly. It includes one 10-round detachable magazine.

The Hakim represents a bold and relatively uncommon chapter in Cold War arms development—an ambitious self-loading battle rifle designed to give Egypt parity with modern militaries during a time of regional upheaval. For collectors of Middle Eastern military arms, direct impingement systems, or post-WWII Mauser-caliber battle rifles, this is a compelling piece with both historical and mechanical interest. -R.E.
