Our Assessment: Ruger’s 77/22 series has always embodied the company’s talent for building refined, reliable rimfire and small-bore hunting rifles, and the .22 Hornet variant is one of the most desirable configurations. Introduced in the 1930s, the .22 Hornet quickly became a favorite among varmint hunters for its flat trajectory, mild recoil, and surprising downrange authority. By 2011, when this rifle was produced, the 77/22 Hornet had become a well-regarded modern platform for coaxing the cartridge’s full accuracy potential, thanks to Ruger’s controlled-feed action, solid steel receiver, and cleanly bedded walnut stock.
The .22 Hornet sits in a unique niche; hotter and more capable than rimfire magnums, yet softer shooting and more economical than centerfire .22s like the .223. In the 77/22’s 20″ barrel, it offers excellent velocity and precision for groundhog, fox, coyote, and small-varmint work. This rifle’s bore condition, mirror bright with sharp rifling and rated 10/10, confirms it is ready for that role. The included Blazer 8–32×44 scope, mounted in Ruger rings, adds significant long-range utility, with clear glass and minimal handling wear.
Cosmetically, this rifle is extremely well preserved, retaining about 99% of its original blued finish and showing only light handling marks on the walnut stock. The checkering remains sharp, the wood-to-metal fit is tight, and the overall presentation is clean and well cared for. With its factory 6-round magazine and quality optic, this 77/22 Hornet is a complete and Fine-to-Excellent setup; accurate, elegant, and perfectly suited for the small-game hunter or precision-minded varmint shooter.
