Our Assessment: This pre-ban Heckler & Koch HK91, manufactured in 1981 with an “IB” date code, is one of the most iconic and desirable semi-automatic battle rifles ever imported into the U.S. Based on the military G3, the HK91 retains the roller-delayed blowback system that has earned legendary status for its rugged reliability and cold-war combat pedigree. Chambered in .308 Winchester / 7.62 NATO, this HK91 features a 18″ barrel (19.5” with flash hider), diopter drum sights, a wide handguard with an HK factory bipod, and a collapsible A3-style stock—making this one of the most sought-after configurations. The bore is bright with strong rifling, though some light erosion is noted, giving it an honest 8/10 rating. The bolt gap measures .009”, within functional range but indicating moderate service use. The black enamel finish remains at approximately 95%, showing scattered wear, optic rail rubs, and light handling marks that are expected on a rifle of this vintage. The furniture is free of cracks or damage, rating in Very Good condition with only light scratches and rub marks.
Original pre-ban HK91s—especially in this configuration with the bipod, collapsible stock, and original German parts—are becoming increasingly scarce, and this example presents with classic features, clean markings, and strong mechanical integrity. Whether you’re a dedicated HK collector, Cold War firearms enthusiast, or simply looking for one of the finest battle rifles ever made, this rifle embodies the balance of accuracy, durability, and Teutonic engineering excellence. -R.E.
