Our Assessment: This 1940 Mauser P.08 is a representative example of an early-WWII “42”-code Luger produced under German military contract. All major components show the correct Waffenamt acceptance stamps—multiple eagle/655 and eagle/656 inspection marks—and the toggle assembly bears the Mauser factory code “42,” confirming manufacture at Oberndorf. Both magazines are numbered to the pistol, a desirable feature that underscores its completeness as a collectible. The internal “50” part stamps indicate matching internals across the small components, further affirming the pistol’s originality.
This sidearm remains in about Good condition overall with roughly 90% of its original blue showing typical field wear, light oxidation, and thinning at the holster-contact points. The grips are solid and well-fit, the bore is bright with defined rifling and minor erosion (rated 6/10), and the mechanics function properly with correct toggle action and crisp lock-up. The included dual magazines, holster, and takedown tool complete an appealing wartime set. As a 1940-dated, code-42 Mauser production example, this Luger illustrates the peak of German sidearm manufacture at the outset of WWII—precise, historically important, and an excellent addition for collectors of service-era German pistols.
