Notes: Colt transitioned to the S-prefix/A-suffix format in the 1990s after the SA-prefix era; late 3rd Gen production resumed the removable cylinder bushing and continued through the 2010s. Reference ranges compiled from Proofhouse/Wilkerson and Colt collector records support this serial in the 2012–2013 window.

Action Type: Single Action Revolver with Side-Loading Gate and Fixed Cylinder

Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY .45”. The left side of the frame is marked with patent dates “PAT. SEPT. 19. 1871 / JULY. 2. 72. JAN. 19. 75.” followed by the Rampant Colt logo. The bottom of the frame in front of the trigger guard is stamped “S92550A”. The right side of the frame, barrel, and cylinder bear inspection markings.

Barrel Length: 4.75”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a square-notch integral to the top strap.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are black checkered hard rubber with Rampant Colt and Eagle motif panels. There are no chips, cracks, or notable wear. The checkering remains sharp, and the panels are excellent.

Type of Finish: Blue Barrel, Cylinder, and Grip Frame with Color Case Hardened Frame and Hammer.

Finish Originality: Original Factory Finish.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 99% of its original finish. The cylinder shows only a faint turn line from indexing. The color case frame exhibits vivid blues, purples, and straw tones. The screws and pins remain unmarred, and the blue finish on the barrel and ejector housing shows only the lightest signs of handling. Overall, this revolver is in Excellent to Like-New condition in its factory case.

Mechanics: The action functions properly with a strong hammer spring and correct four-click lockup. The cylinder locks securely on all chambers, and the timing is correct. We did not fire this revolver. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Included is the original blue Colt hard case with matching label, foam insert, cable lock, owner’s manual, orange warning hang tag, and safety paperwork.

The Colt Single Action Army remains the eternal symbol of the American frontier. This 4.75 inch “Gunfighter’s Length” configuration—finished in deep Colt blue and vivid color case hardening—embodies the same proportions that rode the holsters of lawmen, soldiers, and cowhands from Tombstone to the Rio Grande. The craftsmanship of the Third Generation SAAs, like this example, reflects Colt’s continued reverence for the Peacemaker legacy, with each revolver still assembled and fitted by hand in Hartford.

Chambered in .45 Colt, the cartridge that tamed the West and accompanied U.S. cavalry from the 1870s onward, this revolver bridges modern manufacturing with 19th-century spirit. The color case frame evokes the smoke and sun of the plains, while the deep blue barrel catches light like a river of steel.
