Our Assessment: The Mauser Model 66 is a high-quality bolt-action rifle known for its innovative design and exceptional accuracy. Introduced in the 1960s, this rifle stands out with its unique telescoping bolt system, which allows for a shorter overall length while maintaining a full-length chamber. Due to the telescopic system the overall weapon length is approx. 8-9 cm shorter than a standard action rifle. This design innovation makes the Model 66 both compact and highly accurate, catering to hunters and precision shooters who demand performance and portability.
The 9.3×64 Brenneke caliber is a powerful cartridge, designed in 1927. The 9.3×64mm Brenneke was designed as a medium bore big-game cartridge for standard-sized Mauser 98 bolt-action rifles. The combination of this potent caliber with the Model 66’s design provides a formidable tool for hunters seeking both power and precision.
A key feature of this particular Model 66 is the set trigger. The Double-set trigger mechanism allows the shooter to “set” the trigger to a very light pull weight, significantly improving accuracy by reducing trigger pull resistance. This is especially beneficial for long-range shots where precision is critical. The smoothness of the action and the quality of manufacture pretty much guarantee that owners will tend to be satisfied and content to keep their Mauser 66.
The Mauser Model 66 features a robust, steel construction with a well-crafted wooden stock, made from high-quality walnut. The stock’s ergonomic design ensures a comfortable and stable shooting experience. The rifle is also equipped with a Mauser push button crossbolt safety, which is both reliable and easy to operate.
The Model 66’s precision and reliability are further enhanced by its free-floating barrel and smooth, crisp trigger pull. These features contribute to its reputation for outstanding accuracy. With its combination of innovative design and exceptional craftsmanship, the Mauser Model 66 remains a respected choice among hunters and shooting enthusiasts who value both performance and elegance in their firearms.
