Our Assessment: This Springfield M1A Super Match from 1991 represents the top tier of the company’s M14-style rifles, purpose-built for precision competition. This example features a 22″ Krieger heavy stainless barrel, renowned for its match-grade consistency and ability to hold zero under sustained fire. It’s fitted into a McMillan fiberglass stock that provides a rigid, weatherproof platform and aluminum block bedding stability, eliminating the shifting and flexing seen in traditional wood stocks. The rifle retains the classic M1A gas system and action, tuned for a clean, crisp trigger and smooth cycling.
What makes this rifle special is the combination of hand-fitted craftsmanship and proven match components. The Krieger barrel delivers benchrest-level accuracy with the durability to handle repeated fire without degradation, while the McMillan stock enhances recoil control and shooter comfort. The national match sights provide a crisp sight picture over standard M1A sights as well. Together they create a precision rifle that maintains the soul of the M14 but performs at the level of a dedicated match gun, a true expression of Springfield’s peak production quality from the early 1990s.
