Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1890 is one of John Browning’s most enduring rimfire designs, and this Second Model takedown rifle from 1894 represents the formative years of that legacy. Chambered in .22 Short—the cartridge that defined the early small-game and gallery era—this pump-action delivers the same smooth cycling and precision that made it a favorite across farms and fairs alike. The folding Beech front sight and Marble’s tang sight hint at its past life as a target or gallery rifle, built for careful aim and quiet efficiency rather than sheer power.
Refinished to a high standard, this antique retains about 97% of its renewed blue and vivid case colors, with clear markings, sharp screws, and a bright 9/10 bore. The walnut stocks show light handling and pooling in the finish but remain handsome, complementing the rifle’s mechanical excellence. Compact, accurate, and undeniably classic, this 1894-dated Winchester stands as a beautifully preserved example of America’s golden-age rimfire craftsmanship.
