Markings: The only markings on the rifle is the caliber marking of .38-55 on the barrel underneath the forearm. There is no barrel address or maker’s mark on the barrel or receiver.
Barrel Length: 30” Octagon (replacement)
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a Globe style peep sight sight with a tall post insert dovetailed to the barrel. There is a modern replacement base installed for a tang sight but no sight is present.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a two piece walnut set with a metal tipped forend, checkered straight wrist, straight comb, and a crescent steel buttplate. There are moderate handling marks, scratches and compression dings throughout. There is one small sliver chip out of the left side of the forearm near the cap. The LOP measures 13 1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in Very Good overall condition as a refinished antique.

Bore Condition: The bore on the replacement barrel is bright and the rifling is strong throughout. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its blued and case colored refinish. The case coloring on the receiver and trigger guard are vivid. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent to Fine condition as refinished.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: This Remington No. 1 1/2 Rolling Block Sporter, manufactured between 1888 and 1897, is a quintessential example of the American single-shot sporting rifle from the late 19th century. This reworked model appears to be a sporterized version of a Remington Rolling Block military receiver. Built on Remington’s time-tested No. 1 rolling block action, this rifle was designed for accuracy, durability, and ease of use, making it popular with frontiersmen, long-range shooters, and big game hunters alike. Chambered in the popular .38-55 Winchester cartridge this rifle is capable of excellent range and knockdown power. This rifle is outfitted with a replacement 30″ octagonal barrel. The stock set is finely checkered walnut, with a metal-tipped forend and crescent steel buttplate. While the rifle shows some age-related wear on the stock, the refinished case coloring on the receiver and trigger guard are vivid, the bore retains strong rifling, and the action remains mechanically sound. The wood rates in Very Good to Fine condition, showing only typical handling marks with no cracks or major damage.
