The LOP measures 13” inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the butt pad. The wood on this rifle has been sanded and refinished. The wood shows compressions and minor surface level lines scattered throughout. There are several large compressions including one on the right by the trigger and one on the left flank of the stock. There are no visible chips or cracks. The butt plate shows rub wear around the edges and finish loss with dulled checkering. The door functions correctly and has a strong spring. Overall the stock set is in Very Good condition.
Type of Finish: Parkerized
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is semi bright with well defined rifling. There is very minor visible erosion / pitting throughout the bore mainly in the grooves. Our gauges show a muzzle of 1+ and a throat of 2. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.
Overall Condition: The rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. The friction surfaces of the bolt and receiver show some minor rub wear. The trigger guard, cylinder and top of the barrel also show rub wear. The rifle shows some scattered finish thinning especially on the sight wings. The markings are clear, the screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle is in Good+ to Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: This Springfield M1 Garand, manufactured in May of 1945, comes from the final months of World War II and is paired with a matching May 1945 dated Springfield barrel, making it a period-correct combination. This rifle shows Very Good mechanical condition with a muzzle reading of 1+ and throat erosion of 2, indicating minor wear and a bright bore with strong rifling that should have plenty of life left in it. While the stock has been sanded and refinished the rifle remains a solid representation of late-war U.S. military production.
The M1 Garand, designed by John Garand, was adopted as the standard U.S. service rifle in 1936 and remained in frontline use through the Korean War. Its semi-automatic operation gave American troops a distinct advantage in firepower, especially when compared to the bolt-action rifles used by many Axis powers. Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, it used an 8-round en-bloc clip, allowing for fast and reliable reloading. General George S. Patton famously praised the M1 as “the greatest battle implement ever devised,” highlighting its impact on the battlefield. Rifles from the spring of 1945 are particularly desirable to collectors, as they mark the conclusion of wartime production and reflect the culmination of years of refinement in Garand manufacturing.
