Markings: Left side of slide stamped “SMITH & WESSON.” Left slide and left frame carry factory roll markings including “MADE IN U.S.A. / SMITH & WESSON / SPRINGFIELD, MASS.” The right frame bears the S&W trademark. Serial TBR9286 stamped on the left frame above MODEL 645. S&W medallions on both grip panels. An inspector decal is present on the frame.

Barrel Length: 5 inches

Sights / Optics: White-dot front sight, two-dot white rear sight — original fixed three-dot configuration providing a straightforward sight picture for service and defensive use.

Magazine Quantity & Condition: Two factory stainless magazines included; magazines appear complete and lightly handled, consistent with NIB set condition.

Stock Configuration & Condition: Black checkered synthetic grips with S&W medallions; knurled serrations continue around the grip; panels are straight, bright, and free of cracks or compression marks.

Type of Finish: Satin stainless factory finish.

Finish Originality: Factory original — even, consistent texture with crisp control edges and no visible signs of a refinish. Estimated finish remaining: ~99%.

Bore Condition: Bore is bright with well-defined rifling. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: Excellent — essentially a new-in-box survivor. The slide, frame, and controls show minimal handling marks; edges remain crisp and chamfers sharp in photos. Inspector stickers, original paperwork, owner receipts, and factory packing materials all remain with the set, supporting a preservation history rather than heavy service use. This is a presentation that reads more like a factory set pulled from long-term storage than a service pistol returned from hard duty.

Mechanics: All external controls present and correctly fitted: decocker/safety functions and slide stop appear correct and factory. Magazine release and trigger face show minimal handling wear. We did not fire this pistol. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box / Paperwork / Accessories: Original Smith & Wesson blue box and sleeve with factory label (Model 645, .45, 5″ barrel) present; original cleaning kit and tools in factory wrapping; factory manuals (field stripping and warranty), original payment/receipt paperwork dated 1988, and inspector sticker still on the frame. Complete packaged set with two mags — collector-grade completeness.

Our Assessment:

The stainless Model 645 arrived in the late 1980s as Smith & Wesson’s effort to pair classic .45 ACP power with modern stainless durability and a convenient decocker — a pragmatic blend of service sensibility and everyday utility. This example reads like the kind of pistol that left the factory, was carefully shelved by a fastidious owner, and then resurfaced with its papers and accessories intact. For bidders who prize provenance, the receipts, manuals, and factory kit make a tangible provenance statement: this is not merely a well-kept pistol, it is a preserved factory set.

Think of the .45 ACP’s long American story — the cartridge that helped define service pistols for much of the 20th century — carried here in a stainless package that resists the elements and keeps its lines. In use, the 645 is honest and unflashy: a five-inch slide that tracks cleanly, a decocker for safe carry, and a sighting trio that lets you get on target fast. The visual presentation — satin stainless, crisp stamping, medallioned grips, and inspector decal — gives it an immediate shelf-appeal that will resonate with both collectors of late-20th-century S&W factory sets and shooters who prefer gear that looks cared for.

As an auction offering, this set’s completeness materially enhances desirability. A boxed, two-magazine, fully accessorized 645 with original paperwork and factory stickers is rarer than a run-of-the-mill used pistol; it allows the buyer to own not only a serviceable .45 ACP pistol but a slice of Smith & Wesson history that’s been kept intact. Whether you imagine it in the hands of a late-’80s patrolman loading the magazine on a rain-slicked shift or on the display rack of a careful collector, this is a tidy, honest piece that will present well in a cabinet or on the range. We are no longer offering layaway. KF
