Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “WINCHESTER MODEL 9422M XTR – .22 WIN. MAGNUM / –MADE IN NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A. WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL–”. The top of the chamber is marked with a circled WP proof mark. The bottom of the receiver is marked with the serial number.
Barrel Length: 20”
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a hooded beaded blade, dovetailed to a serrated ramp, screwed to the barrel. The rear sight is a U-notch sight on a riser, dovetailed to the barrel. The receiver is grooved for optics.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are a two-piece checkered walnut, with a straight grip, straight comb, checkered plastic buttplate, and a banded forend. The LOP measures 13 5/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stocks show light wear, with only a couple minor dings in the buttstock. The checkering remains well defined and the gloss finish is strong throughout, showing off the grain in the wood. The stocks fit tightly to the frame with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stocks rate in Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 99% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows only minor handling wear. The bluing is deep and dark throughout. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are sharp. Overall, this rifle rates in Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the half-cock safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 9422M XTR is a polished, fancier example of Winchester’s late-20th century rimfire rifle, the 9422.—built in New Haven during the 1978–1989 era when the company was modernizing traditional lever-gun lines for a market that wanted more capability in a familiar package. The XTR’s 20″ barrel, deep bluing, and tight checkered walnut stock give it the visual presence of a modern classic: compact enough for field work yet styled with Winchester’s long-running design language. The receiver’s optics groove, clean sighting hardware, and a 13 5/8″ LOP make for a rifle that photographs and handles like a well-kept period piece.
The .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire was introduced to give rimfire shooters a true magnum option—significantly higher velocity and energy than .22 LR, making it better suited for longer shots and slightly larger small game. In the 9422M the WMR’s flatter trajectory and increased terminal performance are well matched to the rifle’s 20″ barrel, turning what was once a backyard rimfire into a legitimate varmint and small-game tool when called upon.
Cosmetically this example is exceptional: the bore is bright with sharp rifling (rated 10/10), the bluing is deep and uniform with approximately 99%+ metal finish retained, and the checkered walnut stocks show only minimal handling marks while fitting the action tightly. The rifle is drilled/grooved for optics and presents as a complete, well-preserved Winchester from the company’s late New Haven production—an attractive, ready example for the shooter or collector seeking a high-quality .22 WMR lever gun.
