Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 9422M was one of the finest rimfire lever-action rifles ever produced, blending the mechanical precision of postwar Winchester craftsmanship with the nostalgic lines of the classic 19th-century Winchester repeaters. Introduced in 1972, the Model 9422 quickly became a favorite among collectors and small-game hunters alike for its smooth action, solid steel receiver, and quality walnut stock fitment. Chambered in .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire, the 9422M offered significantly greater power and range than the .22 LR version while maintaining the same quick-handling and low-recoil characteristics that made the platform so beloved.
This 1979 example, part of the “Matched Set of One Thousand” series, is a beautifully engraved and finished commemorative rifle. The oak leaf and acorn motifs, along with wildlife scenes featuring a rabbit, hound, and squirrel, reflect Winchester’s attention to detail during a period when the company still prioritized artistry in its limited editions. The gold-satin receiver and lever contrast elegantly with the deep blue barrel and richly checkered walnut, all of which remain in excellent condition.
With an unfired bore, vivid engraving, and exceptional preservation of both metal and wood finishes, this 9422M is a superb example of Winchester’s late-20th-century commemorative production. A striking combination of mechanical excellence and aesthetic craftsmanship, it captures the enduring appeal of the lever-action rifle in its most refined rimfire form.
