Markings:
The receiver and tang are marked with maker information and model designation. The receiver on the right side is stamped BHA-1493. The top tang is stamped “BIG HORN ARMORY, INC. · CODY, WY, USA · MODEL 89” and also carries the company’s longhorn logo. The markings are crisp and factory-applied, with no indication of re-stamping or aftermarket engraving.
Action Type:
Lever action, large-frame tubular-magazine design suitable for high-pressure magnum cartridges.
Caliber:
.500 S&W Magnum
Barrel Length:
22″
Sights / Optics:
Skinner-style receiver-mounted aperture (peep) sight installed on the actual bolt. The Rear sight is loose and should be adjusted to fit the new shooter and tightened with an alan key; front sight is a dovetailed white-bead blade at the muzzle.
Stock Configuration & Condition:
Straight-comb walnut stock and matching forearm with attractive figuring and crisp checkering. A decelerator-style recoil pad is fitted and remains supple. Stocks show only light handling marks and present as a high-grade, well-matched set.
Type Of Finish / Finish Originality:
Matte/blued finish on receiver and barrel; finish appears factory original and is uniformly applied. Conservatively estimate the rifle retains approximately 90–95% of its metal finish.
Bore Condition:
The bore is bright with sharp rifling and minimal fouling. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9.8/10.
Mechanics:
The lever cycles smoothly by hand; the tubular magazine follower and carrier function during hand-cycling and extractor geometry appears correct. No live-fire testing was performed. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Accessories:
Skinner aperture sight; dovetailed white-bead front sight; sling swivel studs.
Overall Condition:
Very good — well-preserved metal and attractive walnut with only light handling wear. Screw heads show light use and there is no visible evidence of abusive repair or modification to the action beyond the installed Skinner aperture.
Our Assessment:
Big Horn Armory’s Model 89 is a modern, large-frame approach to the classic lever-action rifle, engineered to handle the formidable .500 S&W Magnum cartridge. This example’s combination of a 22″ barrel, Skinner aperture, and high-grade walnut gives it the feel of a contemporary, purpose-built magnum lever rifle while retaining the ergonomics familiar to lever-action shooters.
Cosmetically, the rifle presents very well: crisp maker stamps and a clean finish, attractive figured wood, and a supple recoil pad. As-present this Model 89 is a stout, well-cared-for modern lever rifle that retains the look and function expected from a Cody, Wyoming builder. We are no longer offering layaway. KF
