Caliber: Top: .30-30 Winchester — Bottom: 20 Gauge (3″ chamber)

Barrel Length: 24″

Action Type: Break-open, hammerless, extractor ejector combination rifle/shotgun

Markings: The right side of the receiver is stamped “SAVAGE 24V-SERIES B.” The left side of the receiver is stamped “B622495.” The right shotgun barrel is marked “SAVAGE ARMS WESTFIELD MASS. U.S.A.” The left shotgun barrel and the rifle barrel are both stamped with proof and chamber markings: “PROOF TESTED 20 GAUGE — 3 INCH CHAMBER” and “PROOF TESTED 30-30 CAL.” respectively. All markings appear factory-stripped and legible.

Sights / Optics: Folding rear sight that raises for use and folds when not in use; plain ramp front sight (shows light surface oxidation). Rail provisions for modern optics atop the barrel without gunsmithing.

Stock Configuration & Condition: Pistol Grip-style stock with checkered wrist and forend. Wood is sound with light handling marks and minor dings consistent with use; finish shows honest wear at contact points but no major cracks or repairs observed. Buttplate present and serviceable.

Magazine Quantity & Condition: Single-shot rifle barrel and single-barrel shotgun — no detachable magazines.

Type of Finish: Blued barrels with a case-colored receiver. The barrels retain a serviceable blue; the receiver shows attractive, mellow case colors consistent with age.

Finish Originality: Original. There are light handling marks and edge wear to the blue but no evidence of a recent full re-finish. Receiver colors are original and present with pleasing mottling.

Bore Condition (Rifle): The bore is bright, the rifling is sharp. There is no visible erosion in the bore but there is light, removable fouling. In this writer’s opinion, the rifle bore rates 9.5/10.

Bore Condition (Shotgun): The bore is bright. There is no visible erosion in the bore, but there is minimal fouling. In this writer’s opinion, the shotgun bore rates 10/10.

Mechanics: Break-open action operates correctly, extractor functions, and the tang sight deploys and locks. Triggers and internal components appear functional at a basic level; the front sight shows light oxidation and should be cleaned. There is a residue present on the left side of the receiver that should be cleaned. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Overall Condition: This Savage retains approximately 60–70% of its original metal finish, with the balance showing expected handling wear, light edge thinning, and minor spotting. Wood rates in about good condition for age, with no major structural defects noted. Screw heads show moderate use. Overall, the gun presents as a well-kept example of a practical mid-century American combination firearm.

Accessories / Notes: No case or accessories are included. The gun is a straight, honest field rifle/shotgun combo well suited to upland, varmint, or turkey work; .30-30 offers short-range brush performance while the 20ga 3″ lower barrel gives flexibility for shots where birds or lighter lead are desired. Reference: Savage factory literature and standard reference works such as the Blue Book of Gun Values for general model identification and valuation guidance.

Our Assessment:
Savage’s 24V Series B is the archetypal American combination gun — compact, sensible and built for hunters who needed both a rifle and a scattergun in a single, easily carried package. This example’s 24-inch barrels make it handy in thick country, while the 30-30 over 20-gauge layout covers most field eventualities without excess weight. The case-colored receiver still shows attractive toning and the bores are excellent for the type; mechanically, the action functions, and the sights are complete.

For bidders who want a usable, historically orthodox combination gun that will perform in the field or sit cleanly in a hunting rack, this Savage is a solid pick. The piece benefits from a careful cleaning (including removal of the residue on the left receiver) and a routine gunsmith inspection before extended use; after that it should serve very well. We are no longer offering layaway.  KF
