Stock Configuration & Condition: The wood stock has a semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, stacking loop, double sling loops, and a metal butt plate with hinged door for storage. The LOP measures 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the butt plate. The wood shows scattered lines, scuffs, scratches and compressions throughout. There are several small chips missing from the edges of the wood throughout the stock set. There are no visible cracks. The most notable marr is a compression on the left side of the forward handguard. The butt plate has lost most of its finish, shows rub wear on the edges and some surface rust developing. The door spring is strong. Overall the wood is in about Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized.

Finish Originality: Original.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is well defined. There is barely visible pitting/erosion in the grooves throughout the bore. Our gauges show a muzzle of 2+ and a throat of 5. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 7.75/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 93% of its metal finish. The top of the barrel shows small nicks in the finish. The friction surfaces of the bolt and receiver show wear and finish loss. The receiver also shows some scattered finish thinning. The action is smooth. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle is in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics:  The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes canvas sling.

Our Assessment: This Springfield M1 Garand made in June 1941 falls into the very early production range, as mass issue of the rifle to U.S. forces had only just begun. By mid-1941, the M1 was being distributed more widely to the Army, replacing the M1903 Springfield as the standard service rifle. This example has a replacement Springfield barrel dated 12-1953, indicating an arsenal rework during the cold war after World War II. The receiver bevel shows an arsenal inspection/rebuild mark “O-66” in electro pencil, a common occurrence as rifles were updated and reissued. This example also includes a lock bar style rear sight, a less common addition to these rifles.

The M1 Garand was famously praised by General George S. Patton, who called it “the greatest battle implement ever devised.” Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, the semi-automatic design gave American troops a distinct firepower advantage over enemy forces still armed largely with bolt-action rifles. With over 5.4 million produced during World War II, the Garand became an iconic U.S. service rifle. This example, with its early receiver, cold war replacement barrel, lock bar sight and arsenal marked bevel, represents both the beginning of production and the extensive service life these rifles experienced through multiple rebuilds and upgrades.
