The LOP measures 13 3/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock shows light handling wear, with light scratches, dings, and scuffs scattered throughout. The finish on the stock is strong throughout as well. There are no chips or cracks. The stock fits the frame tightly, with no play. Overall, the stock rates in Good to Very Good condition.
Type of Finish: Blued
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 85% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light wear, with a few scattered light scratches and imperfections throughout the metal surfaces. There is some surface corrosion on the bolt, along with some operational wear on the friction surfaces of the action. The finish on the lever is turning to a patina. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are sharp. Overall, this rifle rates in Good to Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions smoothly and correctly. This rifle has a safety lever located on the right side next to the trigger. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with 1x 4rd detachable magazine, in Good condition.
Our Assessment: Marlin’s Model 62 Levermatic dates to the 1960s and is part of Marlin’s short-run Levermatic line that experimented with detachable magazines and their Micro-Groove barrels during that era. The .256 Winchester Magnum was introduced as a high-velocity small-bore magnum, based on the .357 Magnum case necked down to .257 diameter, aimed at varmint and light-game work; it enjoyed a brief, niche period of factory support in the 1960s and today remains an uncommon chambering, so original examples that retain a good bore and serviceable finish are of particular interest from a historical and preservation standpoint.
This example presents well for its age: the bore is bright with sharp rifling (10/10), the stock fits tightly and rates Good to Very Good with only light handling marks, and the rifle retains approximately 85% of its metal finish with light scattered surface wear. Notable condition points include some surface corrosion on the bolt, slight patina developing on the lever, and operational wear at the friction surfaces. This rifle comes complete with its original magazine. The Marlin Model 62 Levermatic is a home-run for those who collect Marlin lever rifles, or rifles in niche obsolete chamberings.
