Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows scattered light surface corrosion on the barrel, falling block, and lever. Otherwise, the bluing is deep and dark. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are sharp, but a couple of them are also corroded. Overall, this barreled action rates in Good condition, due to the corrosion.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the tang safety. The lever lockup is strong, but a bit stiff due to the corrosion on the falling block. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This barreled action comes with the owner’s manual/paperwork.
Our Assessment: The Ruger No. 1 is among the most distinctive American rifles ever produced, representing Bill Ruger’s vision of a refined, modern interpretation of the legendary British Farquharson falling-block single-shot. Introduced in 1967, the design quickly earned respect for its incredible strength, smooth operation, and minimalist elegance. This early-production 1969 example, chambered in .270 Winchester, hails from the first years of production and is classified as a Curio & Relic, making it particularly appealing to collectors of vintage Ruger firearms.
The .270 Winchester cartridge, introduced by Winchester in 1925, became a favorite of American sportsmen for its flat trajectory, long-range capability, and moderate recoil—traits that made it one of the most versatile big game rounds of the 20th century. Paired with the sleek, 26-inch barrel and robust single-shot action of the No. 1, it offered both precision and elegance in the field. Though this example is a barreled action awaiting new stocks, it retains about 95% of its original bluing and a perfect 10/10 bore, suggesting it was lightly used and well preserved. For collectors, restorers, or those seeking to build a personalized No. 1, this 1969 .270 Winchester barreled action represents an excellent foundation—both mechanically and historically significant.
