Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked with ”MADE IN NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S. OF AMERICA / — WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL—-” “WINCHESTER / TRADE MARK ” logo and “MODEL—70 –.30-06–SPFLD”.  The left side of the receiver is marked “WINCHESTER” ®. The right side of the chamber is marked with the serial number “416839”.  The bolt is pencil etched with the matching serial number416839”.  There are “WP” Winchester proof marks on the barrel and receiver. 

Barrel Length: 24 Inches 

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a hooded beaded blade sight fixed to the top of a serrated ramp.  The rear sight is a flip up semi-Buckhorn sight with a white triangle to help sighting. The receiver has four tapped but unfilled screw holes for a scope mount.

Stock Configuration & Condition:  The stock is a one-piece checkered Walnut with a raised comb, Satin finish with a semi pistol grip, steel checkered buttplate, and two sling loops.  There are scratches and compression dings throughout from normal operational wear.  The LOP measures approximately 13 3/8 ” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate.  There are no chips or cracks present.

Finish Originality: Original 

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and shiny and the rifling is sharp. There is some minor fouling present.  In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10. 

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its original finish.  The WP proof marks are sharp.  The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good to Fine condition as a C&R.

Mechanics: The action functions as intended.  We did not fire this rifle.  As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 has long been known as the “Rifleman’s Rifle,” earning its place as one of the most respected bolt-action sporting rifles of the 20th century. First introduced in 1936, the Model 70 combined controlled-feed reliability, excellent accuracy, and fine craftsmanship, making it a favorite of hunters worldwide. Chambered here in .30-06, makes it one of the most popular cartridges for big game in North America.  It is an ideal rifle for deer, elk, moose or bear.

The Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 from 1957 represents a pinnacle of American rifle craftsmanship during the golden era of firearm production. Introduced in 1936, the Model 70 quickly garnered a reputation for its exceptional accuracy, reliability, and elegant design. Mechanically, the rifle functions properly with a crisp trigger and working safety. The minor cosmetic wear on the finish shouldn’t dissuade any hunter from recognizing and owning one of the most iconic hunting rifles in history.  It is a highly desirable Pre-64 Model 70 in a caliber capable of taking most North American game.
