Our Assessment: This British No.4 Mk2 Enfield, manufactured in 1955 at ROF Fazakerley, represents the final and most refined version of the legendary Lee-Enfield rifle family. Built after WWII for peacetime service and Commonwealth allies, the Mk2 featured key design improvements over the earlier Mk1 variants, most notably the trigger being mounted directly to the receiver rather than the trigger guard, improving consistency and simplifying maintenance. Chambered in .303 British, this bolt-action rifle retains the classic fast-cycling 10-round magazine-fed action that made the Lee-Enfield famous for its rate of fire and rugged battlefield performance. This example is in very good to excellent condition, retaining about 98% of its original finish with only faint wear and handling marks. The serial numbers on the receiver, bolt, stock, and magazine all match, a rarity that enhances its appeal to collectors. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, showing no erosion and only light fouling, rating a 9/10. The wood furniture is likewise excellent, with no cracks or major defects. The only noted issue is a broken detent on the rear ladder sight, which leaves it loose, though repair or replacement is straightforward.
As one of the last factory-produced Enfields before the rifle’s official military retirement, this 1955 No.4 Mk2 is both a highly shootable example and a desirable collector’s piece. It combines historical significance, practical accuracy, and beautiful condition in one of the most enduring military bolt-action rifles ever made. -R.E.
