Our Assessment: The Marlin Model 1895, reintroduced in the early 1970s, brought back a big-bore lever-action powerhouse to Marlin’s lineup. Chambered in .45-70 Government, it delivers massive stopping power for big game hunting, including elk, moose, and bear. Built on the same solid-top, side-eject receiver that made the Marlin 336 famous, the modern 1895 retained the rugged reliability of earlier designs while accommodating modern manufacturing standards and stronger steels, allowing the .45-70 to reach its full potential.

This 2002-produced example is in excellent condition, retaining about 95% of its original blued finish with only the lightest signs of handling. The walnut stocks are equally well-preserved, showing only minor scuffs and scratches, with the signature Marlin bullseye intact in the belly. The bore is very good, rating a perfect 9/10, and the action cycles smoothly with a crisp trigger and a functional half-cock safety. Sight-wise, it’s set up with a blade front, and retains a full buckhorn rear sight with a flip up ladder on the barrel, giving the shooter flexibility in aiming solutions.

For the hunter who values a powerful, reliable, and accurate lever gun, this 1895 is a top-tier choice. Its excellent bore, strong mechanics, and well-maintained finish make it ready for the field. The 26-inch octagonal barrel makes it look like a true old west working man’s rifle.  Whether carried into dense timber for big game or kept as a prime example of Marlin’s post-reintroduction craftsmanship, this rifle delivers on all fronts.
