Markings: The left side of the receiver is marked “VALMET / MADE IN FINLAND” and “No 140841”. The left side of the sight assembly is marked “40841”. The right side of the receiver is marked “M62/S 7.62X39MM / Semi-Automatic Rifle / INTERARMS / Alexandria, Virginia”. 

Barrel Length: 18” 

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a hooded post fixed to the gas block system. The rear system is a flip up aperture on elevator system integral to the dust cover.

Stock Configuration & Condition: This stock is a two piece serrated synthetic stock with serrated semi-pistol grip, tubular metal buttstock, sling ring on the right side of the buttstock, and a sling ring on the left side of the gas block. There is light handling wear. There are some scratches and scuffs on the pistol grip and forend. The LOP measures 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. There is a crack on the left side of the semi pistol grip. There are no chips. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Bore Condition:  The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9 out of 10. 

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows handling and storage wear. There is operational wear. There are scratches throughout the receiver. The screw heads are sharp and the pins are unmarred. The markings are crisp. Overall this rifle is in Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: This rare, collector grade Valmet M62/S is a well-preserved late-1980s Finnish 7.62×39 semi-auto with an excellent bore — bright with sharp rifling and rated 9/10. All markings are crisp and the rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish with only light handling/operational wear; the synthetic furniture shows light scuffs and a single crack at the left side of the pistol grip. The rifle functions correctly on manual check and includes one 5-round magazine, making it a good example for collectors who value original Interarms-imported Valmet pieces or shooters wanting a high-quality AK-pattern rifle in a compact 18″ configuration.

Given its condition and strong bore, this M62/S is ready for acquisition. Have the grip crack assessed (repair or replace for long-term durability) and perform a standard safety check before firing. Overall, we rate this rifle in about Excellent condition — a tidy, serviceable example that balances collector appeal with practical shooting potential.
