Our Assessment: This Lone Star Rifle Inc. No. 1 Target Rifle is a finely crafted modern interpretation of the legendary Remington Rolling Block, built in Conroe, Texas by one of the premier custom makers of precision black powder cartridge rifles during the late 20th century. Chambered in .45-70 Government and outfitted with a 32” octagonal barrel, this rifle is built for competition-grade accuracy with clear nods to classic 19th-century aesthetics. The action is Lone Star’s own precision-machined copy of the Remington No. 1 Rolling Block, and it features top-quality components including a globe front sight with bubble level and an MVA Soule-style tang sight with Hadley eyepiece—perfect for BPCR silhouette or long-range steel target shooting. Cosmetically and mechanically, this rifle is in excellent condition. The metal retains approximately 98% of its original blued and case-colored finish, with vivid case hardening on the receiver and only minor handling wear. The walnut stock is well-fitted, with minor surface wear but no cracks or chips, and the steel buttplate remains sharply checkered. The bore is immaculate—bright with razor-sharp rifling and no erosion—suggesting this rifle was likely test-fired only at the factory. Lone Star rifles are highly sought after due to their build quality and limited production, and this example embodies the craftsmanship that made them a favorite among competitive shooters and single-shot rifle aficionados.
Whether you’re a black powder cartridge silhouette competitor, a fan of long-range steel shooting, or a collector of custom American-built single-shots, this Lone Star Rolling Block in .45-70 offers exceptional performance and classic style. With its premium sights, precise action, and flawless bore, this is a turn-key match rifle with heirloom quality. – R.E.
