Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light wear on the barrel and receiver, with a few minor superficial imperfections on the metal surfaces. The action shows scratches and some surface corrosion. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are sharp. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the cross-bolt safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 61 is a straightforward, well-built American pump-action rimfire whose clean lines and full-length 24″ barrel make it equally useful for hunting, plinking, or display in a post-war Winchester collection. This 1962 C&R example presents honestly and attractively for its age.
Chambered in .22 WMR, the cartridge provides a meaningful velocity and performance advantage over .22 LR for small game and longer-range rimfire work. Key selling points here include a bright bore we rate 10/10, about 96% of the original blued finish remaining, intact original two-piece walnut stocks, and a receiver grooved for optics — practical features that increase both shooting utility and collector appeal.
Cosmetically and mechanically, the metal surfaces retain strong bluing with only light, period-appropriate wear and a few minor superficial imperfections; the action cycles and the cross-bolt safety functions properly as confirmed during our inspection. The stocks show light handling marks and dings consistent with use, and the buttstock is slightly loose (noted above).
This Model 61 is an appealing, usable vintage rimfire that will serve well as a shooter or as a C&R display piece. Please check out our high quality photos, and good luck on your bids! – J.D.
