Bore Condition: The bore of the 12 gauge barrel is bright, with no erosion. The bore of the .243 Winchester barrel is bright with sharp rifling, and no erosion. In this writer’s opinion, the bores rate 10/10.
Overall Condition: This combination gun retains about 98% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light operational wear, with a few minor scattered scratches, dings, and superficial imperfections on the metal surfaces. The markings are clear and legible. The pins are unmarred. Overall, this combination gun rates in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the tang safety. The barrel selector on the trigger functions correctly as well. The trigger has a crisp and clean break. We did not fire this firearm, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: The Valmet 412S is a practical, well-executed Finnish combination gun that pairs a full-power 12-gauge over/under with a rifled .243 Winchester barrel — a versatile pairing that serves well for deer and varmint hunting without compromise. This example wears its age honestly but well: the bores are excellent (both rated 10/10), the bluing is strong at roughly 98% retention, and the checkered walnut stock and forend fit tightly and present attractively for a working gun.
Notable selling points include the ventilated 23½” ribbed top barrel, the grooved/top for optics, a tang safety and functioning barrel selector, and solid mechanical function verified during our inspection. The combination of bright bores, tight action, and serviceable furniture makes this an immediately useful firearm for a hunter who wants a reliable gun for the truck, ranch, or for just having a rifle with European flair.
Cosmetically there are light-to-moderate handling marks and minor dings consistent with regular use, but no structural damage and no play in the stocks. This firearm would make a great addition to a European firearms collection. Please check out our high quality photos, and good luck on your bids! – J.D.
