The LOP measures 13 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the butt plate. The action has been partially bedded. The wood shows light scattered lines and compressions. The rear section of the rear upper handguard has a very thin crack. The top bedding does not go all the way around the rear of the receiver only on the forward half. The top of the forward handguard shows a small chip. The right side of the wrist has had a chip filled and repaired.  The butt plate has lost its finish, turned brown with age, and is beginning to develop surface rust. The checkering and door spring are strong. Overall the furniture is in Good condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with defined rifling. There is very, very minor visible pitting on the lands in the last third of the bore. Our gauges show a muzzle reading of 1 and a throat erosion of 2. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. The cylinder lock, sight wings and plug show finish loss. The bolt and friction surfaces of the receiver show minor rub wear. The action is very smooth. The trigger feels slightly heavier than other National Match Garands that I have seen. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle is in about Very Good to Very Good+ condition.

Mechanics:  The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: This Springfield M1 Garand National Match was originally manufactured in April 1945 and later re-barreled sometime after 1953 with a Springfield replacement barrel stamped 4-1953. The rifle shows correct National Match markings on the front sight, rear sight, barrel and gas cylinder, and its action has been bedded to the stock for improved consistency. The stock bears two DOD cartouches, which may indicate a post-conversion reinspection, and the original owner reports the rifle was sold by the CMP as a National Match rifle though no paperwork or grading card accompanies it. The bore presents well and the rifle is in Very Good+ overall condition. This rifle should prove to be both a capable shooter and an attractive collectors’ example.

National Match Garands were hand-fitted and selected for competitive accuracy, and the combination of authentic NM markings, a 4-1953 Springfield barrel, and a bedded action gives this example meaningful performance pedigree beyond a standard service rifle. Whether used on the range or held as part of a collection, the rifle’s proven National Match features, solid bore, and tidy overall condition make it a desirable, historically significant piece that marries mid-century arsenal work with shooter-ready functionality.
