Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.  In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows some operational wear, thinning on the leading edges and muzzle. There are some larger spots of missing finish on the barrel near the muzzle.  The markings are clear. The screwheads are strong and sharp. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine overall condition.

Our Assessment: The Remington Model 40-X was built to be a match-grade rifle right from the factory.  This U.S. Marked trainer in .22LR Winchester exemplifies the purpose-built precision that defined Remington’s custom shop in the late 1950s through the 1970’s. With its 28” heavy barrel, Olympic front and rear match sights, hand-fitted action, and target-stocked walnut furniture, this rifle was designed to meet the demanding needs of military marksmen, benchrest competitors, and law enforcement snipers. The 40-X line established Remington’s reputation in the realm of factory precision rifles and is still considered a benchmark even decades later.

This rifle retains about 95% of its original metal finish with light wear consistent with careful use. The bore is exceptionally clean with sharp rifling, and the stock remains solid and serviceable. The minor alterations, like the bolt cutout at the comb and the broken optic screw, do little to detract from this rifle’s mechanical integrity or value to a shooter. Whether you’re a serious precision shooter, collector of vintage target rifles, this 40-X offers both performance and collectibility in a highly respected platform.  Please see our High Quality photos for a better understanding of condition and good luck on your bids.
