Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 Classic Featherweight Stainless was part of the company’s effort in the 1990s and early 2000s to bring back traditional Model 70 features in a modern hunting rifle. The “Classic” designation denoted the return of controlled-round feed with the full-length Mauser-style extractor, a feature many hunters and riflemen considered essential for reliability in the field. In Featherweight trim, the rifle carried a lighter profile barrel and a trim stock, combining portability with the proven accuracy and ruggedness of the Model 70 action. Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, it offers one of the most versatile cartridges of the 20th century, capable of handling game from deer and elk in North America to large plains game abroad.
This example is stainless steel with walnut stocks, a pairing that blends weather resistance with traditional lines. It remains in excellent, like-new condition with a 10/10 bore, crisp checkering, and virtually no evidence of use. The receiver is drilled and tapped for optics, making it immediately ready for a scope setup, while the Decelerator pad provides comfort against the recoil of full-power .30-06 loads. Well-preserved and representative of Winchester’s Classic revival, this Featherweight is both a highly functional hunting rifle and an attractive modern collectible.
