Our Assessment: The IMI Uzi carbine imported by Action Arms from 1980 to 1989 is widely regarded as the gold standard of semi-automatic Uzis. Designed by Uziel Gal during his time in the United States while working with Action Manufacturing, the carbine incorporated a newly developed closed-bolt mechanism and a series of refinements required for ATF approval. IMI in Israel produced the semi-automatic Model A while Action Manufacturing formed the Action Arms subsidiary to import and distribute the rifles in North America. Aside from the mandated 16? barrel and semi-automatic operation, these carbines remain mechanically and visually faithful to the legendary open-bolt Uzi family used around the world, giving collectors the iconic silhouette and proven engineering in a legal, civilian configuration.
This particular example is presented in exceptional, original condition and benefits from its complete, factory-packed presentation. The receiver and furniture show only faint handling marks from storage and retain nearly all of their original finish; controls, folding stock, and the included factory magazine are correct and unaltered. Accompanied by the original Styrofoam insert, IMI instruction manual and Action Arms paperwork, spare display barrel, 16? barrel, sling, and accessory literature, the package offers a level of completeness that significantly enhances desirability to collectors. Mechanically, the rifle appears factory-test fired only, the bore is bright with sharp rifling, and the selector and folding stock operate as intended — all points that support a high collector grade.
For the Uzi enthusiast or the collector seeking a canonical pre-ban Action Arms import, this boxed IMI Model A is a standout example: historically important, mechanically sound, and unusually complete. Its provenance as an Action Arms import and the presence of original manual and box accessories make it an attractive acquisition for museums, advanced collectors, or anyone wanting a turnkey, display-ready example of a pivotal chapter in Uzi civilian history.
