Our Assessment: The Weatherby Mark V Custom Shop in .460 Weatherby Magnum is the apex of modern big-game bolt-action design when fitted from the factory with Custom Shop appointments. Built to Weatherby’s demanding standards and finished with engraved “Weatherby Custom” furniture and deluxe skip-line checkered walnut, this rifle pairs the Mark V’s stout action and ported 26? barrel with the sort of cosmetics and fit that belong in a Weatherby Custom catalogue. Chambered in the .460 Weatherby Magnum, it is purpose-built for the largest North American and African dangerous game, and the rifle’s hefty lines, rosewood trim and engraved floorplate read as a serious, high-end hunting tool rather than a mere showpiece.
The .460 Weatherby Magnum was introduced in 1958 by Roy Weatherby, building upon his earlier success with cartridges like the .300, .340, and .375 Weatherby Magnums. At the time, there was no factory cartridge that could deliver the velocity and energy Roy envisioned for his dangerous-game rifles, so he created the .460 Wby. Mag. by necking up the .378 Weatherby Magnum case to accept a .458″ bullet. The result was the most powerful commercial rifle cartridge in the world for decades, holding that crown until the release of the .700 Nitro Express in the late 1980s. Performance-wise, the .460 Weatherby Magnum was—and still is—staggering. It is capable of pushing a 500-grain bullet at 2,600 feet per second, generating nearly 7,500 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. That’s more than double the energy of the venerable .375 H&H Magnum, and it made the .460 Wby. Mag. a go-to choice for hunting the largest and most dangerous animals on earth, including Cape buffalo, elephant, and Alaskan brown bear. Roy Weatherby himself demonstrated the cartridge’s capability on numerous African safaris, helping cement its reputation.
As inspected the rifle is an outstanding example: 99%+ of the original blued finish remains, the checkered high-grade walnut is sharp and tight to the action, and the jeweling and engraved floorplate present vividly. The bores are bright with deep, sharp rifling and rate 10/10 in this writer’s opinion (aside from typical storage dust), which bodes very well for accuracy and long-term service. The included Weatherby Premier 3–9×40 scope is clear and in excellent condition with only superficial imperfections noted; the ported barrel and robust Mark V action function correctly on bench check, the tang safety operates as intended, and the trigger breaks crisp and clean.
For collectors and serious hunters this Mark V Custom Shop example is highly desirable: it combines near-new cosmetics, flawless bores, and correct custom engravings with a cartridge that defines dangerous game performance. Expect interest from buyers seeking a top-tier Weatherby with both aesthetic presence and immediate field capability — a rifle that will serve as a centerpiece in a high-end collection or as a no-compromise hunting tool for experienced big-game hunters prepared for the stout recoil and performance of the .460 Weatherby Magnum.
