Our Assessment: The Ruger New Model Blackhawk carries forward the robust, single-action blueprint that made Ruger a staple of late 20th-century American handgunning. This 1980 example, fitted with a 5.5″ CCG-marked barrel and refinished in vibrant case color and blue, reflects the era’s strong custom and gunsmithing culture—period owners and custom shops often upgraded barrels, sights, and finishes to tailor revolvers for target work or sport shooting. The tall pinned front blade and adjustable rear notch, two-piece walnut grips with minimal wear, and the cylinder’s plum patina contribute to a visually striking, era-appropriate appearance that reads as both carefully maintained and sympathetically customized.
Cosmetically this revolver presents very well: approximately 97% of its metal finish remains with attractive case colors and light handling wear consistent with careful use, and the bore is notably bright and strong at an in-writer’s 9.5/10. The included non-matching Ruger hard case and the clean, crisp markings (including the CCG barrel stamp) further underscore the piece’s period-correct presentation. As a snapshot of 1980s Ruger single-action customization—refinished yet sympathetically executed—this Blackhawk documents the intersection of factory reliability and aftermarket personalization that defined many late-20th-century American revolvers.
